Petaluma ADU
Scope
A small backyard barn is transformed to become a unique workspace, complete with a bathroom and tailored functionality, creating a garden retreat.
The structure’s original interior wood is reenvisioned and utilized throughout, in different ways, bringing warmth, texture, and a sense of continuity to the compact footprint. The result is a quiet, efficient studio that elevates everyday working life while honoring the character of the past.
This is a study on creative salvage and reuse, influenced by the layers of history and patina from the original building.

Built-in cabinetry with copper mesh screening weaves beauty and functionality, layers and translucency.
Each exterior facade displays a different finish of Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese wood preservation method that enhances beauty and longevity.
